State-wise MSME Statistics in India 2026

India’s MSME ecosystem is spread across every state and Union Territory, but the scale of registered enterprises varies substantially between regions.
The Ministry of MSME’s Udyam system provides one of the most useful official sources for understanding this distribution. It combines registrations on the Udyam Registration Portal with informal micro-enterprises registered through the Udyam Assist Platform (UAP)
As of 29 July 2026, the Ministry’s dashboard recorded:
| Indicator | Latest figure |
|---|---|
| Total MSMEs including Udyam + UAP | 8,94,61,002 |
| Udyam registrations | 5,08,35,022 |
| Udyam Assist Platform | 3,86,25,980 |
| Micro enterprises | 8,88,79,788 |
| Small enterprises | 5,39,573 |
| Medium enterprises | 41,641 |
| Employment reported | 39,58,30,317 |
The figures demonstrate the enormous scale of India’s formalizing MSME ecosystem, but they should not be interpreted as a complete count of every business operating in India. Registration data measures enterprises captured by these government registration systems.

MSME Distribution Across Indian States

At that date, 7,83,02,882 enterprises had been registered nationally.

What stands out
Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh are clear leaders by registration volume, followed by Tamil Nadu and West Bengal. Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Gujarat form another large group of states with substantial registered MSME ecosystems.
This reinforces an important point for market analysis: India’s MSME opportunity is not concentrated in only the traditional metropolitan business centres.

MSME Registration by Enterprise Size
The latest Ministry dashboard shows a very strong concentration of India’s registered MSMEs in the micro-enterprise category.
As of 29 July 2026:
| Enterprise Category | Registrations | Approx. Share |
|---|---|---|
| Micro | 8,88,79,788 | ~99.36% |
| Small | 5,39,573 | ~0.60% |
| Medium | 41,641 | ~0.05% |
| Total | 8,94,61,002 | 100% |
Calculated from the Ministry’s latest dashboard figures.
This distribution is significant because India’s business ecosystem is overwhelmingly made up of micro enterprises.
For B2B market analysis, this means that business size is an important segmentation variable. A strategy designed for large manufacturers or established companies should not automatically be applied to the broader MSME market.

MSME Activity Distribution
The Ministry’s dashboard also classifies registered enterprises by their primary activity.
As of 29 July 2026:
| Activity | Registered MSMEs |
|---|---|
| Trading | 3,77,80,914 |
| Services | 3,36,68,421 |
| Manufacturing | 1,80,11,288 |
Trading and services together account for a substantially larger number of registrations than manufacturing.
This matters when evaluating India’s B2B market because the term “MSME market” does not mean “manufacturing market.”
A company selling machinery, industrial equipment or raw materials may need a manufacturing-focused database, while software, financial services, consulting, logistics and professional-service providers may have a much broader opportunity across trading and service businesses.

MSME Employment
The latest Ministry dashboard reports 39,58,30,317 employment opportunities associated with registered MSMEs and informal micro enterprises represented in the dashboard.
This makes the MSME ecosystem important not only from a business-count perspective but also from an employment and economic-development perspective.
The geographic distribution of MSMEs therefore has implications for:
- Local employment
- Supplier networks
- Consumer demand
- Business services
- Credit requirements
- Technology adoption
- Industrial development
- Regional market expansion
The Five Largest MSME Markets
The Government’s February 2026 snapshot highlights five particularly large registration markets:
Maharashtra
With more than 10.14 million registered MSMEs, Maharashtra had the largest number in the February 2026 government dataset.
Its business ecosystem spans manufacturing, finance, services, trading, logistics and a large corporate base.
Uttar Pradesh
Uttar Pradesh recorded more than 8.60 million registered MSMEs, making it the second-largest state by registrations in the February snapshot.
Its large domestic market and broad geographic footprint create significant opportunities across manufacturing, trading, services and local businesses.
Tamil Nadu
Tamil Nadu recorded more than 6.22 million registered MSMEs.
The state is particularly important for manufacturing, engineering, automobiles, textiles, electronics and industrial supply chains.
West Bengal
West Bengal recorded more than 5.31 million registered MSMEs.
Kolkata and other regional business centres contribute to a large trading, services and manufacturing ecosystem.
Karnataka
Karnataka recorded nearly 5 million registered MSMEs in the February 2026 government dataset.
The state combines traditional MSME activity with a major technology and innovation ecosystem centred around Bengaluru.

MSME Growth Is Not the Same as Business Opportunity
A high number of registrations does not automatically mean that a state is the best market for every company.
Businesses should combine MSME registration data with:
- Industry concentration
- City-level business activity
- Purchasing power
- Infrastructure
- Logistics
- Investment
- Competition
- Workforce
- Customer demand
For example, a software company and an industrial machinery company may rank the same state very differently because their target customer ecosystems are different.
This is why state-level MSME data is best used as a market-sizing and segmentation indicator, rather than as a standalone expansion ranking.
