State-wise MSME Statistics in India 2026

State-wise MSME Statistics in India 2026 infographic showing 8.94 crore+ total MSMEs through Udyam and Udyam Assist Platform registrations as of July 29, 2026. The infographic highlights 5,08,35,022 Udyam registrations, 3,86,25,980 Udyam Assist Platform registrations, 8,88,79,788 micro enterprises, 5,39,573 small enterprises, 41,641 medium enterprises, and 39,58,30,317 employment generated. Source: Ministry of MSME, Government of India.

India’s MSME ecosystem is spread across every state and Union Territory, but the scale of registered enterprises varies substantially between regions.

The Ministry of MSME’s Udyam system provides one of the most useful official sources for understanding this distribution. It combines registrations on the Udyam Registration Portal with informal micro-enterprises registered through the Udyam Assist Platform (UAP)

As of 29 July 2026, the Ministry’s dashboard recorded:

IndicatorLatest figure
Total MSMEs including Udyam + UAP8,94,61,002
Udyam registrations5,08,35,022
Udyam Assist Platform3,86,25,980
Micro enterprises8,88,79,788
Small enterprises5,39,573
Medium enterprises41,641
Employment reported39,58,30,317

The figures demonstrate the enormous scale of India’s formalizing MSME ecosystem, but they should not be interpreted as a complete count of every business operating in India. Registration data measures enterprises captured by these government registration systems.

For a broader analysis of India’s business ecosystem, regional development, industries and future growth, read the India Business Landscape Report 2026.

MSME Distribution Across Indian States

For a consistent state-by-state comparison, the Government of India’s 28 February 2026 dataset provides a complete snapshot of enterprises registered through Udyam Registration Portal and Udyam Assist Platform.

At that date, 7,83,02,882 enterprises had been registered nationally.

What stands out

Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh are clear leaders by registration volume, followed by Tamil Nadu and West Bengal. Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Gujarat form another large group of states with substantial registered MSME ecosystems.

This reinforces an important point for market analysis: India’s MSME opportunity is not concentrated in only the traditional metropolitan business centres.

For a broader comparison of state business ecosystems, including MSME scale and FDI, see Top Business States in India 2026.

Maharashtra ranks first with 1,01,44,478 registered MSMEs, followed by Uttar Pradesh with 86,03,272, Tamil Nadu with 62,27,609, West Bengal with 53,10,326, Karnataka with 49,91,314, Madhya Pradesh with 48,27,725, Rajasthan with 44,46,338, Gujarat with 43,69,973, Bihar with 42,73,285, and Andhra Pradesh with 39,28,602. MSME Registration by Enterprise Size

The latest Ministry dashboard shows a very strong concentration of India’s registered MSMEs in the micro-enterprise category.

As of 29 July 2026:

Enterprise CategoryRegistrationsApprox. Share
Micro8,88,79,788~99.36%
Small5,39,573~0.60%
Medium41,641~0.05%
Total8,94,61,002100%

Calculated from the Ministry’s latest dashboard figures.

This distribution is significant because India’s business ecosystem is overwhelmingly made up of micro enterprises.

For B2B market analysis, this means that business size is an important segmentation variable. A strategy designed for large manufacturers or established companies should not automatically be applied to the broader MSME market.

Infographic titled “India’s MSME Ecosystem by Enterprise Size” showing Udyam and Udyam Assist Platform data as of 29 July 2026. Total MSMEs are 8,94,61,002, including 8,88,79,788 micro enterprises representing 99.36%, 5,39,573 small enterprises representing 0.60%, and 41,641 medium enterprises representing 0.05%. Total employment generated is shown as 39,58,30,317. The infographic highlights that over 99% of India’s MSMEs are micro enterprises. Source: Ministry of MSME, Government of India.

MSME Activity Distribution

The Ministry’s dashboard also classifies registered enterprises by their primary activity.

As of 29 July 2026:

ActivityRegistered MSMEs
Trading3,77,80,914
Services3,36,68,421
Manufacturing1,80,11,288

Trading and services together account for a substantially larger number of registrations than manufacturing.

This matters when evaluating India’s B2B market because the term “MSME market” does not mean “manufacturing market.”

A company selling machinery, industrial equipment or raw materials may need a manufacturing-focused database, while software, financial services, consulting, logistics and professional-service providers may have a much broader opportunity across trading and service businesses.

Infographic titled “Where India’s MSMEs Operate” showing activity-wise distribution of 8,94,61,002 MSMEs as of 29 July 2026. Trading accounts for 3,77,80,914 MSMEs or 42.23%, services account for 3,36,68,421 or 37.64%, and manufacturing accounts for 1,80,11,288 or 20.13%. Trading and services together represent 79.87% of total MSMEs. Employment generated is shown as 39,58,30,317. Source: Ministry of MSME, Government of India.

MSME Employment

The latest Ministry dashboard reports 39,58,30,317 employment opportunities associated with registered MSMEs and informal micro enterprises represented in the dashboard.

This makes the MSME ecosystem important not only from a business-count perspective but also from an employment and economic-development perspective.

The geographic distribution of MSMEs therefore has implications for:

  1. Local employment
  2. Supplier networks
  3. Consumer demand
  4. Business services
  5. Credit requirements
  6. Technology adoption
  7. Industrial development
  8. Regional market expansion

The Five Largest MSME Markets

The Government’s February 2026 snapshot highlights five particularly large registration markets:

Maharashtra

With more than 10.14 million registered MSMEs, Maharashtra had the largest number in the February 2026 government dataset.

Its business ecosystem spans manufacturing, finance, services, trading, logistics and a large corporate base.

Uttar Pradesh

Uttar Pradesh recorded more than 8.60 million registered MSMEs, making it the second-largest state by registrations in the February snapshot.

Its large domestic market and broad geographic footprint create significant opportunities across manufacturing, trading, services and local businesses.

Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu recorded more than 6.22 million registered MSMEs.

The state is particularly important for manufacturing, engineering, automobiles, textiles, electronics and industrial supply chains.

West Bengal

West Bengal recorded more than 5.31 million registered MSMEs.

Kolkata and other regional business centres contribute to a large trading, services and manufacturing ecosystem.

Karnataka

Karnataka recorded nearly 5 million registered MSMEs in the February 2026 government dataset.

The state combines traditional MSME activity with a major technology and innovation ecosystem centred around Bengaluru.

For a detailed interpretation of the business strengths and expansion potential of India’s leading states, read Top Business States in India.

MSME Growth Is Not the Same as Business Opportunity

A high number of registrations does not automatically mean that a state is the best market for every company.

Businesses should combine MSME registration data with:

  1. Industry concentration
  2. City-level business activity
  3. Purchasing power
  4. Infrastructure
  5. Logistics
  6. Investment
  7. Competition
  8. Workforce
  9. Customer demand

For example, a software company and an industrial machinery company may rank the same state very differently because their target customer ecosystems are different.

This is why state-level MSME data is best used as a market-sizing and segmentation indicator, rather than as a standalone expansion ranking.

MSME Market: Key Insights

1. Maharashtra remains the largest registered MSME market

The February 2026 government snapshot places Maharashtra first by registered MSMEs.

2. Uttar Pradesh has enormous MSME scale

With more than 8.6 million registrations in the February snapshot, Uttar Pradesh represents one of India’s largest business markets.

3. The South has multiple major MSME ecosystems

Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana all have substantial registered MSME bases.

4. Manufacturing is only one part of the MSME market

Trading and services account for more registrations than manufacturing in the latest national dashboard.

5. Micro enterprises dominate

More than 99% of registrations in the latest dashboard are classified as micro enterprises.
